It’s time to pep up your Thursdays with Powerball, a lottery craze that has taken the country by storm since it arrived in May 1996. What’s so special about it? Compared to games like Saturday Lotto, Powerball gives you relatively better odds of winning. Take note, however, that Powerball is no cakewalk since its first division is more challenging. Interested yet? Here’s what you need to know about Powerball:
When Can I Play Powerball?
Powerball is played every Thursday night in all states. The draw’s close time depends on the state lottery. For instance:
- For NSW Lotteries, Powerball draws close every Thursday at 7:30pm.
- For Tattersalls and Golden Casket, draws close every Thursday 7:30pm as well. The latest results are generally available by 9:00pm (AEST) on the evening of the draw.
- For Lotterywest, the close time is at Thursday 5:00pm.
- For SA Lotteries, the close time is at Thursday 7:00pm.
As for your draw’s schedule, check your lottery ticket to see when your game is drawn.

There are three ways to play Powerball:
A standard game is played by choosing five regular numbers from 1 to 45, and a separate Powerball number also from 1 to 45. The lottery company then selects the winning numbers, with the five regular numbers selected from one machine, and the Powerball drawn from a separate machine. If your numbers match the ones selected by the lottery company, you win the game.
You can also play multi-week entries for other days of the week, using the same numbers for several weeks at a time.
There is also a systems entry, which lets you choose more numbers per game to increase your chances of winning.
How Can I Check Results?
